[April Fool's] LEGO announces 75553 Supersized Tim!

Posted by ,

Four years after the launch of several Minions: The Rise of Gru sets, LEGO is returning to the animated franchise and introducing a new kind of set! The press release follows:

75553 Supersized Tim
102,213 pieces, rated 18+

We’re excited to announce that The LEGO Group is launching a new range of Supersized LEGO sets; our biggest builds yet! These commanding display pieces will take weeks to complete and take up more space in your home than is practical, but they will be HUGE talking points when guests come round.

Launching the series, we have created a Supersized Tim Minion! He’s an adorable 2.5 metre-tall Supersized Minion, made of a staggering 102,213 LEGO pieces. Tim's iconic wry smile alone consists of over 1000 pieces and this imposing figure is complete with authentically-detailed overalls, featuring Gru's logo.

Notably, we have not been provided with pricing information at the moment, but based on the piece count, I think we should be preparing for the worst!

Find out more about this supersized set at LEGO.com.

What do you think of this monumental Minion and the concept of Supersized sets? Let us know in the comments.

Thank god it is April 1st

By in Germany,

Yes, that makes sence. April fools! My biggest concern is where to store the instructions after building it? Underneath a bed? It must be around 50cm in hight when closed if its a usual 18+ set. One brick per page!

By in Spain,

The printed instructions lol

Gravatar
By in Spain,

This day in Spain is celebrated on December 28, so at first I believed it!!! ;-p

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Thank God it's April the first!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Is this the best they can come up with this year? :D

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

No limited edition Gru:(

Gravatar
By in United States,

That’s one big instruction manual…

Gravatar
By in Germany,

I thought he was called Kevin, not Tim...

Gravatar
By in United States,

This is a day-one purchase for me, but I bet they'll overprice it. I'm hoping it's closer to $10,000 but if I know Lego, I know that they will try to price it at $11,999.99 or something crazy like that.

Gravatar
By in Singapore,

looking forward to the rebrickable mods :-P

Does it come with a brick separator?

I needed that laugh. A+

I bet they took it from a Legland somewhere. Or some employees are already finished with their work and had spare time to build it. Another thing would be some sort of A.I. program.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

If you click through to the LEGO site, there’s a size guide showing this build next to an average sized person standing on an 18” box with two bananas on their head! There are other, even sillier, height comparisons :~D

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

A better April Fool would've been that Lego have announced that their set prices are too high and that they're reducing them.

Gravatar
By in Italy,

ahahahahahahahahhahaa

Gravatar
By in Hungary,

Honestly, I wouldn't mind some smaller (5-10k pieces) brick-built models in the Legoland style which would be available on request. It would be pricey, to be sure, but could widen further the range of products.

This really ties the room together.

A good April Fool's needs to be just plausible enough that people will believe it. No one would be taken in by LEGO announcing a price cut. That would be completely unbelievable.

Interestingly (or not - depends on your preference), there is actually a counter at the bottom of that page counting down and currently at around 1 day and 20 h left. Could this be counting down to the reveal of the Despicable Me 4 sets?

See, the AI generated mockups I tend to see always look way worse than this; melty looking and uneven, with arbitrary lines scrawled on to make it look brick built in ways that don’t make sense. They’re also atrocious at doing mock ups of boxes. This seems fairly comprehensive other than the top of the head seemingly pointing in a different direction from the rest of the body, but I put that down to potentially being a CGI composite rather than direct generation

It wouldn’t be the same on here without an unfunny April 1 ‘joke’. Good work.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The official video on the Lego website is hilarious!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The number of pieces is the April Fools hint!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Part of me really wants all of the "official" April Fool's sets to be catalogued here, especially because this has a set number and I want to see if they ever use it for something else

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Simply love it! A gargantuan yellow banana on the shelve for display, my oh my, this IS going to impress my fellow AFOL's around town!!!

PS: Great 1st of April prank, nicely done!

Gravatar
By in United States,

It’s got more pieces than the 31203 World Map.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Is this April Fools, or is LEGO seriously doing this?
(Probably April Fools)

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Almost fooled on Instagram. The part of Lego wanting to go for another: This is our biggest set yet! clouded my mind. :-)

Does the second picture have a flower vase right in front of the TV?

I noticed that too. Yes, this one is actually named Kevin.
Edit: Apparently this is actually Tim, who looks almost identical to Kevin.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Darn it! I got really excited for a couple seconds. I'd love for LEGO to make more larger scale Minions like 75551.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Almost had me! That looks akin to what you might find built in an actual LEGO store as opposed to an actual consumer set

Gravatar
By in France,

Hmmm... And of what lego part would be the hairs made of ? Any suggestions? For a few seconds I had forgotten April 1st today, and really believed incoming of this... Thing was true. Then read it was to be 2,50 m high, and at last came to my mind that something went wrong with it. So somehow, April's fool worked. Thank you ??

Easily move Supersized Tim™ Minion from room to room with these safety straps.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Love that video on the Lego site; especially the shot of the huge instruction book where each step just adds one yellow 2x4 brick to create a stack of yellow 2x4 bricks.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I knew this was a joke immediately: LEGO wouldn't let go of their 'downsizing' thing that easily.

Not gonna lie though, that build is quite impressive.

The straps! For date night! ??

Gravatar
By in United States,

Well, dang. Too bad its 4/1, I will never have the option to acquire this!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Lovely April Fool joke. I particularly like the "Fun date activity" of moving the model around!

At 3p/p who has £3000 for one? It's just a bit too big. If they had said 1.5m tall, the right size for adults to be "Gru sized", then that would have been more believable and we would have been queueing up, especially if there had been instructions for half a dozen different Minions! Of course adults might expect more than one piece per instruction stage.

Very exhibitable and an easy thing for LUGs to do together. We've done x6 and x10 figures before. And yellow is one of the least bleaching colours so it has longevity too. Cue world records of LEGO Minions assembly!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I love the poke at the instruction manual, one piece at a time and the size of the manual. The added "Teeny-tiny sets to build while you wait" being the Eiffel Tower, the Titanic, the Liebherr Crawler Crane, and the Orient Express, made me laugh. My Eiffel Tower sits on my coffee table, in front of my couch, similar to the way Tim is in the room.
note: sadly Tim wouldn't even fit in my room, my ceilings aren't that high.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Great but what’s the countdown on the website for?

Gravatar
By in United States,

First saw this revealed on LEGO’s Instagram. The moment the box was brought into the room on the video, I was like, ha ha very funny.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I read 2.5 metres, but understood it as 2.5 feet at first, and thought supersized sets that big were a good idea...

Gravatar
By in United States,

I wonder how much would it be if this was a real set?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I had a feeling this may have been a joke right away, and the selling point of "will take up more space in your home than is practical" was what made me certain of it! It's a pretty nice Legoland-style model, though, and I can't deny it would be interesting if Lego made such models more widely available, especially the ones that reach the end of their time being used in the parks; I have wondered before what they do with the ones they no longer use. ...although I can only dread the prices that would involve...!

Personally I'm most amused by that lifestyle picture where the lady has this giant thing is in the middle of her living room; her expression suggests that she's having several regrets xDD

@AustinPowers said:
"I thought he was called Kevin, not Tim... "
Good point, I didn't catch that. I do recall though that this Minion design didn't definitively become Kevin until DM2, because that name was used for a Stuart-lookalike in the first movie (the one who Gru shrinks with the shrink ray). Tim was one of the trio who, in an earlier scene, were sent to get a new unicorn toy for Agnes, and also looked like this, but I don't remember him being acknowledged again after the initial movie. On the whole, minion names seem to have been used pretty interchangeably at first.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

My main concern with this is the multiple non-matching shades of yellow we are likely to get. Just another example of the decline in LEGO brick quality over the past decade. Otherwise, it would be a day 1 purchase for me!

All hail Lord Gru!

It comes with a wall separator. It's the only way to remove it from your home once built.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

"102,213 pieces"... I see what you did there!

(For those who didn't: 1+0 ; 2+2 or 2x2 ; 21+3 = 1-4-'24 )

Though @meesajarjar72 beat me to it ;-)

Funny April fools joke!

Gravatar
By in United States,

This minion will be taller than everyone who has lived, except possibly Robert Wadlow and John (Bud) Rogan. For those who don't know, Robert was the tallest man who ever lived, at 8 foot 11 inches, while John came in at 8 foot 9 inches, according to Wikipedia. This is ironic because minions are incredibly short compared to humans in the films.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

NGL, this is actually quite funny. The image of the table with just yellow and a book that makes the phone book look small is great. Oh, and the box in the background revealing it's the size of a person...

It must be hollow, so you can easily fit the instructions in there ;)

Interesting, I think I have to rewatch the first movie. Haven't seen it in a long time. I thought he was always called Kevin.

By in United States,

Man, my little brother who really likes minion was jumping all over he (was) super excited until we realized it was a cruel joke! Kinda funny though!

Gravatar
By in Canada,

There is a wiki for everything nowadays. Here goes:

Tim: In Despicable Me, Tim is a tall two-eyed minion with short Sprout-Cut Hair. He is usually seen dressed as a father. He is seen wearing a mustache and a tie. Tim is one of the minions who is asked to buy Agnes a new unicorn (with Mark and Phil). When he went to the Grocery store, he tried the massaging chair. Then, he and Phil joined Mark to sing Copacabana. Tim also appeared in the scene when he stole the Shrink Ray. Tim appears when Gru announces his new work with Dave and Stuart. He and the other two minions are spotted with Gru, at the mall where they are given the muffin recipe they needed for the muffin shop. Gru praises Tim's hair, but it's inconsistent because this minion has different height and hair. Tim is later seen along with Dave and Stuart when going to Paradise Mall with Gru. Tim disguises as a father again (possibly a Grandfather since this has been called a grandfather in Minion Rush) , this time with balding hair and a beard instead of a mustache and a hat and now wears a business shirt while keeping his tie. Tim was also seen among the other minions who are kidnapped by Dr. Nefario using an ice cream truck (accompanying the Jelly Jar Minion) and was taken back to El Macho's lair. Tim later became an evil minion and was seen with other minions when Gru, Dave and Stuart came to save Lucy and stop El Macho, then when Dave and Stuart are discovered, Tim and the rest of the evil minions pursue Gru, Dave, and Stuart, Tim along with other evil minions climbed one of the towers and approached Gru when all the sudden evil minions were reversed. with Dr. Nefario's antidote and converting them to normal. Tim is later seen at Gru and Lucy's wedding dressed as a cop with a mustache as they sang YMCA. Tim also reappears in Despicable Me 3 as a prisoner minion with black and white overalls with the number 310, later seen in a pillow fight with the minions and Dru, Gru. Voiced by Pierre Coffin

Kevin: go see the Despicable Me wiki. The entry for Kevin is way too long to post here - even the one above is quite long for a not known cartoon character. At least Kevin is very well known.

(It seems Tim was in the first movie and only appear as a cameo afterward. Kevin was in the second movie and pretty much everything minion related afterward - which would explain why it is much better known)

Gravatar
By in United States,

Let the Minion Army building begin!!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The thin line between a joke and reality is an interesting one. This, at 2.5m tall, is clearly a joke. However, if they made it 1m or maybe 1.25m tall instead, it would be perfectly believable.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Yeah makes you wonder how many people are just going to build their own now…
Cuasing the price of yellow bricks to quadruple!
Hahahahha
:)

Gravatar
By in United States,

The fact that they created a whole webpage, video, schematics and even safety handling instructions is actually impressive. They really committed to the bit. Bravo, LEGO.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Gotta love that picture with the huge box in the back :-)

Even when obvious joke was obvious, still a good one...

Gravatar

I assume that the price would be pretty back-breaking…

Gravatar

Previous April Fool's included Lego doing a Queer Eye set and the disproportioned Hulkbuster.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@AustinPowers said:

Kevin has a sprout of hair in the center of his head, where this guy has a full...er head of hair. Kevin, Stuart, and Bob never even appeared in any films prior to the first Minions movie, and Otto never appeared before the second one. Dave is, by reports, the only Minion who has appeared in every film (DM1-3, M1-2).

Gravatar
By in United States,

@HOBBES:
There was _a_ Kevin in at least one previous film but the names of the Minions film trio weren't pulled randomly from a hat, there's some meaning behind them, and they kinda had to ignore any existing characters for that to work.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Yes - day one purchase!! I might even buy 4!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Ah where's the poll? I'm buying it as soon as it's released

Gravatar
By in United States,

I love the safe handling instructions, especially "Forklift not included." And then just below those, there's probably my favorite part of the whole thing: "The LEGO Group and/or its affiliates are not liable for any lifestyle disruption arising from having Supersized Tim™ Minion living with you at home and looming over all the things. Consult your chiropractor before and after assembly."

Not at all. April Fools' Day has become a commercial, corporate-led event.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm actually curious as to weather or not this build was made just for the joke. LEGO puts big statues like this outside amusement park rides all the time. I wouldn't be surprised if this is a prototype of some Universal Studio's decor, assuming there's no LEGO Despicable Me stuff at the park already.

Gravatar
By in United States,

bro would need a pretty big… BANANA and it kinda looks fake and A.I. generated. I mean just look at the colors to bright of a yellow in “NORMAL” room. love the teeny tiny sets.
